The 2012 ESPN Body Issue marks the fourth year the magazine showcases
photos of athletes in the buff. This year, ahead of the summer London
Olympics, the U.S. volleyball team is featured. Also the spotlight is
on Tyson Chandler, Rob Gronkowski, Carmelita Jeter, Maya Gabiera and
Ashton Eaton, to name a few. Egad! Lolo Jones is missing.
Monday, the Bleacher Report suggested that while the magazine is
likely to attract its run-of-the-mill gawkers and others, who
celebrate the hard work athletes put into sports, it is arguably
missing three names.
Women's tennis star, Maria Sharapova, former Kansas Jayhawks (now NBA)
player, Thomas Robinson and MLB's Bryce Harper are missing from the
ESPN 2012 Body Issue, according to BR, which said "these three major
names would provide an added boost to this issue's popularity."
Tyson Chandler on why he posed nude for the Body Issue of ESPN The Magazine:
"I think it gives the average person a good look at athletes'
bodies and why we are able to do the things we do. I think a lot of
people are curious about it. I wanted to allow people to look at my
body and see why I'm able to do the things I do on the court. Also,
it's a very artistic shoot, and seeing that in past issues made me
want to do it."
Abby Wambach shares how she feels about her body image:
"I am a firm believer that if you feel good and you are happy and
you are doing all the things you need to on a daily basis -- whether
it be for your profession or as a professional athlete -- you are
going to be more comfortable in your skin."
The ESPN 2012 Body Issue magazine includes:
Carlos Bocanegra (soccer), Daniela Hantuchova (WTA), Rob Gronkowski
(NFL), Abby Wambach (soccer), Tyson Chandler (NBA), Candace Parker
(WNBA), Maurice Jones-Drew (NFL), Jose Bautista (MLB), Brad Richards
(NHL), Maya Gabiera (surfing), Ronda Rousey (MMA), Mike Smith
(jockey), Tim Morehouse (fencing), Walter Dix (track), Danell Leyva
(gymnastics), Suzann Pettersen (LPGA), Ashton Eaton (decathlon),
